A teacher asked me today to think more carefully about this books share. These kids are English learners who may not have anyone to explain American culture to them… Picture books can require so much background knowledge for American kids, I wonder if we should be more thoughtful about this? Is any book better than no book? Perhaps we should be sending books that are easier to read?
for use in Media Projects and Web Pages, Blogs, Wikis, etc.
Most of the media in these collections are attached to generous copyright licensing. Though you may not need to ask permission to use them when publishing on the Web for educational purposes, you should cite or attribute these images to their creators unless otherwise notified! If you see any copyright notices on these pages, read them for further instructions.
Just a reminder that you can create your own resource lists in the Catalog or use mine. I continue to add to them as new books come through the library and always appreciate suggestions (e.g., “I read this book and am using it to teach this convention or trait or author’s craft”…)
This year we added a subscription to Britannica to the library’s resources. It is linked on the library page and can be accessed by using the user name: “wdsd” and password: “info”.
There are many interactive and educational features on this site. I encourage you to explore, in particular the student friendly websites, dictionary atlas and thesaurus as well as workspaces to save your research. The Learning Zone is an interactive site for student’s pre-k through second grade.
Don’t forget to check out the multimedia links on the right side of the search screen.
Still need more information? Our subscription includes access to Compton’s and Britannica for middle school and high school students as well.
I will be teaching students use of this tool in the upcoming weeks and hope they can show you this wonderful resource on a computer sometime soon!
As always I am happy to answer any questions, though email is best!
I have spent the last two days with librarians all over the country (including Jen Hill and Susan Hennessey for our district) talking about 21st Century skills and the crucial role librarians have in helping our students acquire them. I am energized and motivated to bring these “big” ideas back to you all at TBPS and will continue to post here as I weed through my piles of information.
I added a resource list in the catalog for kids who have families in the military… as you browse this resource please let me know if there are titles that should be added to our existing lists. To finkd them, click on catalog, then resource lists.
