Resource Lists

Photo 5

Just a  reminder that you can create your own resource lists in the Catalog or use mine.  I continue to add to them as new books come through the library and always appreciate suggestions (e.g., “I read this book and am using it to teach this convention or trait or author’s craft”…)

To get there,

>Go to the Library Homepage

>>Click Library Catalog

>>>Click the Catalog tab

>>>>Click Resource Lists on the left side

>>>>>Click on the Public Lists tab.

Britannica!

This year we added a subscription to Britannica to the library’s resources.  It is linked on the library page and can be accessed by using the user name: “wdsd” and password: “info”.

There are many interactive and educational features on this site.  I encourage you to explore, in particular the student friendly websites, dictionary atlas and thesaurus as well as workspaces to save your research. The Learning Zone is an interactive site for student’s pre-k through second grade.

Don’t forget to check out the multimedia links on the right side of the search screen.

Still need more information? Our subscription includes access to Compton’s and Britannica for middle school and high school students as well.

I will be teaching students use of this tool in the upcoming weeks and hope they can show you this wonderful resource on a computer sometime soon!

As always I am happy to answer any questions, though email is best!

School Library Journal – Leadership Summit

Summit09_header2

I have spent the last two days with librarians all over the country (including Jen Hill and Susan Hennessey for our district) talking about 21st Century skills and the crucial role librarians have in helping our students acquire them.  I am energized and motivated to bring these “big” ideas back to you all at TBPS and will continue to post here as I weed through my piles of information.

Google expands search options

Thanks to Shannon Walters for this update:

Done a google search lately?  Notice the new “Show options…” button on the search results page -under the search box next to “web”.  Google is now letting users filter searches with easy to use options.  You can limit searches by type (videos, forums, reviews), by time, by images from the page, etc.  The Wonder Wheel option (toward the bottom of the options list) is a graphical web of related terms for searches.
Note- in all cases, results of the new search appear on the right- it’s time for wide-screen monitors!

Video tutorial of new Google search options:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtirDMfcOKE
(BTW- Google just announced another round of free Google Teacher Academy training.  The upcoming session is 8/5/09 in Boulder, Colorado.   http://www.google.com/educators/gta.html  Application deadline is 7/3! )

Readability

Thanks to Chris Costello for posting this link for Readability.

Simply follow the directions on the page to create your settings, then drag it to your toolbar.  It extracts miscellaneous text and images from a webpage leaving only primary content.

I have used it several times and am pleased!

Good luck,

Nancy

Anagrams

Eric found this great site for anagrams…

He typed in Rolland Lafaette and got all kinds of anagrams (some more appropriate than others)

You could do this for your kids and have them guess which is theirs…

Fun!
